As we entered 2020, we had an ever-increasing client portfolio and clients we hadn’t seen for many years returning to see Tamlyns in a new lease of light. Our Auctions were increasing in ways of popularity, quantity and quality of goods and the team were building relationships with well-respected persons in the Antique and Collectible world.

Unfortunately, what started as a positive year for Tamlyns Auction Room, quickly changed to a period of great uncertainty that disrupted and continues to disrupt many businesses. Tamlyns, like many businesses had to sadly furlough 75% of its workforce while the world went into lockdown to fight against the COVID-19 virus back in March 2020.

As time went on, businesses were able to reopen, in a very different world from the one that we had been accustomed to prior to the first lockdown. Tamlyns were able to get our Residential and Rural Surveyors back at work and continuing to keep the property market moving. Remarkably those facets of the business performed very well in what was otherwise an extremely turbulent year.

Regrettably, not all areas of Tamlyns were able to come out of the pandemic in a positive light and thus we have, after 142 years, made the extremely difficult decision to close the doors on our Antique and Collectibles Auction Room.

Everyone at Tamlyns thanks you for your contribution over the years and whilst it was an extremely sad decision for us to have to make to have to close the Auction Room after such a long history, we know that the rest of the Tamlyns business will and does continue to grow.

Recent Auction Results


All purchases are subject to an 18% buyer’s premium (plus VAT at the standard rate) on the hammer price.

Payment methods accepted include debit cards, bank transfer and cash (up to £3,000).

For general sales, we ask for items to be cleared on the day where possible, otherwise by the close of Friday on the week of sale.

Purchasers may be subjected to a daily storage charge after this date.


The charge for selling lots at auction is 15% of the hammer price (plus VAT at the standard rate). All lots are insured while awaiting sale on the premises, for which a charge of 1% (plus VAT) of the hammer price is charged.

There is a lotting fee of £1 (plus VAT) per lot on all sales. Notification of all lots entered into sales plus confirmation of agreed reserve prices will be either emailed or posted the week before the sale.

Sale proceeds (less our charges) will be transferred direct into vendor’s bank account seven working days after the sale.

Vendors will also receive a detailed statement via email or post.
